In this definitive work, the author sketches the geographical, historical and artistic background of Chinese rugs. He demonstrates (in 95 color plates and 60 monochrome plates) the singular colors of Chinese rugs, their symbols, their materials, the technique used in their manufacture, their development, and the way in which they differ fundamentally from all other Oriental rugs. Eastern Turkestan rugs are illustrated and examined for comparison. The book also includes descriptions and illustrations of rugs with specific uses (saddle rugs and pillar rugs) and the peculiar style and setting of rugs from the border regions of Kansu, Suiyan, Tibet and Mongolia.
